For years, a higher percentage of American citizens opted out of the electoral process than in any other major democracy. Low turnout rates were taken as a sign of disengagement, of cynicism, of apathy. Disproportionately, the people who stayed home on election day were black, Latino, young, poor – they were from demographics that tend to break for the Democratic party, and tend to harbour more progressive sentiments, on issues ranging from access to healthcare through to drug law reform and environmental awareness, than the population as a whole.
